Provence is best known for its perfect rows of lavender, sun-soaked landscapes and crisp rosé.
Rather than exploring it by coach or by car, however, an increasing number of Australians are exploring it from the water, cruising along the Saône and Rhône rivers on luxury ships between Beaune and Arles.
I recently explored it with Emerald Cruises, here are nine things I loved along the way.
1. Hiking at Tournon
Tournon and Tain l’Hermitage look exactly like you imagine French villages would. The twin towns, founded by the Romans, are nestled in a picturesque valley on either side of the Rhône and connected by an impressive suspension bridge. The best way to explore is on an EmeraldACTIVE excursion (which is included in the fare), hiking into the sun-soaked terraced vineyards on the Tain l’Hermitage side, which is where Syrah grapes originated. It's a great way to get some steps in before the mercury gets too high.

2. Cycling to Glun
The Rhône originates at a glacier in Switzerland and flows across Lake Geneva before it meanders through France, functioning as an artery for the countless towns and villages scattered along its banks. It’s one thing to experience it from the ship, but for a different perspective, take a complimentary e-bike and join a cycling tour from Tournon to Glun, a hamlet about 11km away. Your senses will tingle as you feel the sun on your skin, smell the freshly cut grass, hear the birds sing, and try to race the current.
3. Wine tasting
Emerald Cruises brings experts on board at different stages of the cruise to teach guests about local culture. One of the highlights on Emerald Liberté is the opportunity to learn from a visiting sommelier, tasting the wines grown on the very hills you’re looking at. In this part of the world, look for sweet Viognier with notes of peach and apricot, and light-bodied Syrah with dark forest fruits and chocolate.

4. Exploring Viviers
Viviers is a tiny riverside village that makes a deceptive first impression. From the dock, it looks nondescript, but as soon as your guide takes you down the cedar-lined street from the river to the hill upon which the city centre is built, you’ll realise it’s a veritable open-air museum. You’ll explore the maze-like streets and medieval architecture on a free walking tour, enjoying the fantastic views as you climb to the pinnacle – the small-but-magnificent cathedral, built in a flamboyant Gothic style.

5. Canoeing in Avignon
It’s easy to lose yourself in the walled city of Avignon, going from shop to shop as you taste local treats and marvel at the handicrafts. However, if you’re the kind of traveller who enjoys active experiences, you need to try the EmeraldACTIVE canoeing program, in which you’ll paddle into town and float directly beneath the famous Bridge of Avignon. It’s included in your fare, but make sure you sign up early.

6. Palace of the Popes
You can’t visit Avignon without seeing the tremendous Palace of the Popes, which was the home of the Catholic Church in the 14th century. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed site is both a fortress and a palace, making it a true testament to the church’s power. As soon as you see it, you’ll understand why it’s one of the most important medieval buildings in Europe and one of the most-visited sites in France.

7. Pool cinema
One of the coolest things about Emerald Liberté is that the pool area is dual purpose. By day, you can sit and relax or work out by swimming against the jet. By night, it’s transformed into a cinema, where you can unwind and watch flicks in a comfortable lounge with freshly prepared popcorn. In the morning, the space is used for stretch classes, which are a perfect way to limber up for the busy day ahead.
8. Provençal cuisine
French food is famously delicious and this particular part of the world is renowned for its gastronomic heritage. During your cruise, the chefs will prepare regionally inspired meals that change throughout your trip, including classics such as French onion soup, beef bourguignon, and exquisite desserts such as crème brûlée and raspberry mousse. Emerald Cruises guests are also treated to a special Provençal dinner, prepared by local restaurateur Fabian Morreale - another highlight included in the fare.

9. Freedom to explore
The best part of a river cruise, however, is the ease. The ship combines luxury accommodation with seamless travel - you can unpack once, you never have to worry about how to get from point A to point B, and you won’t waste time in transit. You can also tailor your own journey, whether you choose from a range of included activities every day, or pursue your own interests and enjoy the freedom to explore.
